In everything I do, I am an artist. Whether it’s the logistic scheduling for a production, setting up a film shot, or performing a dance, I am always implementing my artistic craft. I am an artist with vision, and with everything I do, I step back and create an outlined image so I can dive deep inside without loosing the whole.
My multi-form artistic pursuits are interconnected, fueled by passion and a singular creative practice that I use to approach all of my work. I can use my many skills and ways of thinking gained from these pursuits to continuously expand what I can do as an artist. I believe there are no true limits to what the arts can do, but rather channel creativity to find a solution and innovation.
When I perform, I use my technician and management background to guide me through the piece by imagining the whole of the work to visualize how all the dancers and elements fit together. I can see the stage as if it’s a shot from a movie, a drawing I have done, or a show that I have pieced together, to perform in a way that supports the fullness of the choreographer’s work.
When I’m a Director of Photography, Graphic Designer, or Art Director, I use my performance and dance knowledge to understand how things move together. A good cinematographer moves with the people on screen as though it is a choreographed dance.
When I am a Production Stage Manager, I can use my background in dance to work with performers in understanding their needs, and sense what’s happening os stage to time my cues perfectly. I can expand my mind to see the flow of an entire show, from set up to break down, by implementing skills gained from my engagement with fine arts and film.
My creative practice is rooted in this ability to see things in big picture and combine knowledge from multiple areas to think efficiently, holistically, and continuously re-imagine what the arts are capable of.
